Miller's Ferry Volunteer Fire Department
2008 Junior Fireman's Muster
Results
On Saturday Sept. 13 the Juniors of Miller's Ferry Fire Dept. hosted our first annual Junior Firefighter Muster. With ten departments from five counties participating we are pleased to report that we had a great day full of activities.
With temperatures in the nineties all juniors participating showed great efforts with the activities that they had to perform, some fun and some grueling. The day started with team registration where some departments with less than enough team members combined with others to create teams that also took trophies. The first event of the day was the Turn Out Gear Race. Linwood teams four and seven took second and third place with the combined team of South Iredell, East Spencer, and Franklin (South East Franklin) taking first place. The second event was the Waterball where South East Franklin took third and the second place trophy went to Miller's Ferry, this events first place trophy was claimed by Granite Quarry.
About midday we took a break for everyone to take part in a lunch of hotdogs and hamburgers, drinks were provided from Cheerwine, we had baked goods prepared by the Miller's Ferry Auxiliary and popcorn and cold Sno-Cones provided from the Junior firefighter program. All the departments took a rest break and enjoyed the camaraderie of the other participating junior firefighters.
The day gets tougher after lunch with the tug-of-war being the third event. With all teams giving hard efforts and some grueling pulls the third place trophy went to Shepherds Fire Department. Clemmons Fire Department juniors were able to take home the second place trophy with the first place being earned by Linwood Fire Department.
The forth event for the day was the Bucket Brigade where after two ties and runoffs we finally got to the winning results. The Miller's Ferry Department teams blue and red took the second and third place trophy where the Granite Quarry Juniors taking the first place home again.
The last and possibly the most grueling task of the day (the Tug-Of-War had to be a close second), was the Junior Firefighter Challenge. The first member of this team was required to drag a charged hose a hundred feet and then run to the next station where he tagged off his next teammate who had to hammer the Kiser Machine and then crawl through a pipe to tag the last partner. This teamate had to drag a Rescue Randy fifty feet to the finish line. With all these teammates performing the duties in full PPE these guys and girls endured some tough conditions with the heat. The third place was taken by Reeds Fire Department with the Millers Ferry Blue team holding on to the second place. After the Granite Quarry Fire Department took the first place trophy in the challenge that also gave their participants the honor of taking claim to the overall winners of the event.
The Linwood Fire Department took the Headache award with the South East Franklin team receiving the Sportsmanship award.
Recognition awards were provided to Howard Overcash of South Iredell and Mooresville Fire Departments and Mike Spry of Franklin and Salisbury Fire Departments for their time and efforts in the judging of all these events. Participation awards were provided to all departments participating in the event. Thank you to every one who made this event possible.
